ALL AGES - FAMILY

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE PRODUCTION

The classic tale with a modern twist: 11-year-old Alice is with her family in the town of Grimethorpe, when the rain starts pouring down. Taking shelter in a pet shop, she encounters a talking white rabbit. Following the rabbit, Alice falls down a hole into Wonderland, a fantastical realm filled with peculiar characters.

In this version, Alice embarks on a quest to save Wonderland from the tyrannical Queen of Hearts, who runs an oppressive sweatshop. With the help of characters like a chivalrous White Knight and a forgetful Duchess, Alice must devise a plan to rescue her new friends and confront the Queen. Alice's bravery lead her to be the one to restore harmony to Wonderland.

About the music

Will Todd's music incorporates jazz, blues, and swing elements alongside more traditional operatic vocal styles. Will Todd has crafted distinct musical characterisations for each of Carroll's eccentric characters; such as blues for the Caterpillar. He has successfully employed a diverse musical landscape to engage audiences, while maintaining emotional depth. His score incorporates an eclectic blend of styles, which brilliantly enhance the otherworldly atmosphere.

About the words

Maggie Gottlieb's libretto adapts Lewis Carroll's classic tale into a structured narrative, crafting a more linear plot to connect Carroll's episodic scenes into a cohesive story about Alice's quest to save Wonderland from the tyrannical and exploitative Queen of Hearts. The libretto balances familiar elements from the original work with new additions, creating a framework for Will Todd's music while maintaining the whimsical spirit of Carroll's beloved characters.
